Click Insert tab Reference panel Dialog box launcher. Find In the External References palette, select the reference name that you want to bind. Right-click, and click Bind. In the Bind Xrefs dialog box, select one of the following options: Bind converts the objects in the xref into a block reference. When you reference an external drawing in a host drawing, the resulting Xref is like a block insert in the host drawing. This means you cannot modify (e.g. Stretch) individual objects of an Xref when the host drawing is the active drawing. In AutoCAD Release 14 you had to Open the xref drawing file if you wanted to make changes to the individual objects in an Xref.
Dec 06, 2019 An xref is a separate drawing, that you insert (reference) into a another drawing. As an example, using an xref as a background for another drawing. By using an xref (rather than coping and pasting the drawing as a block) you can be sure that you are. Feb 11, 2014 In which case you could select the xref, right-click and select the Open Xref instead of the RefEdit. The main point is that RefEdit was never a perfect tool. It simply has too many places where it can (and usually does) break down. The 'newer' BEdit seems to be more robust, but then it only works on blocks - not xrefs.

some problem we encountered after binding the xref become a block mostly like a baseplan & equipment system . can't edit block In-place in block references in latest autocad 2014 LT.
When saving an AutoCAD drawing there is a Thumbnail image saved (if you have the option turn on), but when the command 'Edit Xref In-Place' is used there is no Thumbnail image saved. So now when I try to preview any drawing that has been edited through this command there is no longer a thumbnail.
I am using AutoCAD 2012 and the option to save a thumbnail is turned ON.
I am trying edit an Xref in place in a sheet file both through the paper space view port or within the sheet file's model space but receive a pop-up warning that states 'Selected Xref Block is NOT editable'. Other sheet files are set up the same way and allow edit Xref in-place.
We have about 300+ dwg's on which somebody edited the 'xref in place'.
This has caused the particular dwg files to expand from 300k to 4mb.
Purging seems to have no effect. Is there any way of reducing the file size on these back to normality?
Any way to force the checkbox in my attached pic to 'Prompt to select nested objects'?

I'm getting very long run times to edit x refs in place. Once the exref drawing opens, sometimes after 2 or three minutes, and I make my edit, It can take ten minuted to close the xref.
Drawing are clean, purged, -purged, recovered audited. Computer is new workstation and dedicated to CAD only. Very little opportunity for corrupted files.
Scenario:
1. You have a base map with survey points inserted.
2. You create a sheet, xref the base map, freeze survey points in base map, insert survey points into sheet so they can be manipulated for visual clarity.
Problem:
In sheet drawing, using the edit xref-in-place command to edit base map causes the points to want to be reinserted and in a lot of cases, when the sheet drawing is re-opened, the points are completely gone.
I am working on Xrefs in autocad, I come across one scenario as below,
AutoCAD application is not allowing me, when tring to 'Edit Reference In Place' mode for read only xref file. and displaying below dialog box.
I'm using acad 2010. Twice now this has happened in two days. Using edit block in place. I edit the block, pick save and gone, Acad just closes down, no warning no nothing.
I use refedit quite a bit to edit blocks in-place, but can't find a way to do this with dynamic blocks without breaking the link to the original definition and creating a new block definition.
Is there a setting I can change, or another way to edit a dynamic block in-place?
When I try edit block in place this error occurred:
Errors found in references to other objects:
Object reference missing: AcDbXrecord, to AcDbBlockTableRecord

Can you edit a block in place (refedit) without changing globally and without exploding within that drawing?
When I edit a block in place, REFEDIT toolbar pops up. This is good.
But why even I clicked 'Add to working set' button on the toolbar, it still asks me select 'Add' in command line?
Apparently I already selected 'Add' button.
Is there a way to skip this command line option?
I created a number of 3D blocks to be inserted into a 3D model of a building. I created the blocks in a separate drawing first; i defined them locally, then, when i had them the way i wanted them, I used 'wblock' to save all of these blocks to a folder.
I then opened the 3D building model and tried to insert one of my new blocks. I repeatedly get the following:
'AutoCAD Application has stopped working'
with the following info from microsoft:

I have tried repairing my installation of autocad with no improvement.
i tried opening the drawing of the block itself, copying it, and pasting it via the 'copybase' command into the other drawing with the same result.
Occasionally, autocad will ask me if i'd like to debug the program (and visual studio opens) -- it mentions a 'StackOverflowException' within acad.exe, and also mentioned 'windowsbase.dll'.
I am using windows 7 pro x64 and autocad 2011.

The autocad error-reporting dialog never gets launched as it is forced to close before this point.
Is it better to implement the title block of an electrical drawing in the model space or paper space? I have a co worker who implements it in the model space as shown below. On the other hand, I was taught to implement it in the paper space and then bring in the drawing via viewport.
I suppose it's a bug, and I wonder how can it be fixed:
If you edit attribute settings in a dynamic block, and put:
Constant: yes
Lock position: no
You can't neither change the position in the Model, nor edit text. I suppose that with this two settings selected the way showed above, one should be able to move the attribute in Model space.
How do i change color inside blocks on my xref? (much of the orginal file is builded in blocks). I need to have everything in color 8 (grey).
On attached pictures
The red, cyan and green is blocks on the orginal file.
I have a drawing where I have placed all of my natural gas piping. I have all of the annotative blocks set to 3/32'=1'-0' and 1/32'=1'-0' scales. They are both correctly displayed in this drawing.
When I xref this drawing into another about half of the 1/32' blocks show up correctly. The other half are shifted to the right off of the plan. All of the 3/32' blocks show up correctly.
This was originally posted under 2009 - but I have this issue in 2010!

When I go into block editor, edit the block then close it out. My cursor is really jerky in model space. Especially bad when I go into a command and try to select something. The only way to get rid of the jerkiness is to close auto cad and restart it. Is there anyway to cure this?
I have 2010 and am experiencing this exact same problem. It is intermittent and will sometimes 'go away' after a few minutes. Block editing is definitely related as a cause. I use SDI = 1 predominantly and it seems to be session independent. In other words one drawing session is experiencing the problem but jumping to another concurrent session exhibits no issues.
Task manager shows off the chart 99% plus on process ACAD when it is occurring.
Palette transparency is off globally. I have installed the latest NVidia driver for my Quadro NVS 285 video card. I am running a 3GHz P4 with 4 Gigabytes of ram - Dell Precision 380 workstation. Block Editor background color is default.
Restarting AutoCAD does make it go away - for the moment - but it is soon back. Even closing all tool palettes has no effect.
This does seem to be drawing specific - 2010 seems to be sensitive to something in older drawing blocks - prototype drawings from hotel vendors for instance - most likely inherited from a third party DXF process exhibit the issue heavily - and blocks from these drawings to a lesser degree. I have to constantly purge, audit, and wblock/replace my drawings to keep them clean. My default file type is 2010 which 'seems' to work, but it still happens. Audits show constant drawing errors cropping up, and repeating an audit, shows the same errors until a wblock replace is performed.
I am running autocad 2012 and my block edit command is not working. im getting the following response:
When I first create block or edit a block and add attributes, the attributes will not show up on the block.
I but insert the block again for the attributes to show up.
Is there a way to update blocks with out having to re-insert the block again?
How to use block editor to create, delete, and edit blocks? What I do is copy and paste as block to create a block. Is that a good approach?
I have only one user with this problem. He tries to edit an attribute block and when he selects one of the values and erases it the default value doesn't erase. He then has to enter some text and erase that and it works.
When editing block in-place, not onely objects in the block, but also other objects (just drawn normal in modelspace), is affected by the commands.
how to place a rendered image into an Inventor 2011 Drawing?
Our company just upgraded to AutoCad 2011. We get files from our clients that exports their files from revit. It seems that Autocad 2011 slows down when reading this files (cursor will have a second or two delay).
I use AutoCAD for mac 2013. I'm a interior design student and I have a question regarding editing 3D Blocks which can be downloaded from the web.
If I download a 'free' 3D Block, is it possible to edit the block in a way which removes the 'original origin' of that block?? I have tried exploding the block and redefining it in a wblock file and changing the layer. But I'm not sure if this process has removed the original information which it came from..
If there is a way to remove the origin (that is came from the web).
When I attach an Xref to the file I am working with, it is dimmer in color. Is there a way to edit the xref file so that it appears brighter & easier to read. I seem to call this ability in some previous training, but I cannot seem to figure out how to change it.
AutoCAD 2008.I have read numerous articles saying that AutoCAD has made this feature drawing specific as opposed to an overall setting. What this means is that every drawing you edit layers in a xref, you get pop ups stating that layers have changed. Especially annoying when you are publishing a set of drawings. Does any overall command to turn this nonsense off completely? Or a command that will reconcile the layers automatically without the pop up message?
Any way to just bind a raster image into an autocad drawing, without having it show up in the xref manager?
I need a way to count blocks (specifically employees on a production line), and I used to use a 'count' lisp command that worked great. I'm thinking that lisp doesn't work in LT. I don't use Acad every day anymore, and I am quickly forgetting many commands and tricks.
Untill recently I have been able to edit my blocks or xref files in place. Now when I try do that CAD tells me to select nested item. Is this a setting a changed by mistake? If so what is it?

when you bind an xref the link disappears from the xref manager.
is it possible to bind an xref, but preserve that link in the xref manager? i realize that will lead to two copies of the same object in the drawing (one xref, plus the new block). everyone's okay with that happening.

How do I bind an ex referenced image file?
I'm attempting to bind an xref into a drawing. I keep getting an error message: 'Some objects in the specified xref failed to bind.' Any reason why some objects couldn't bind? I've thawed all layers in the drawings.
I am trying to bind an Xref into my working drawing. Whenever I try to perform this command, an error message appears that says 'Some objects in the specified Xref(s) failed to bind.' No list of objects has been provided. I have tried exploding, purging and auditing both the Xref and the working drawing to make sure there are no extranneous objects in the files, but the message keeps appearing.

is it possible to bind an an xref via ObjectDBX without opening the drawing?
I cannot edit any block attributes in my drawing. When attempting to do so, the command line states: 'The object is on a locked layer'. All of the layers in my drawing are unlocked, on and not frozen.
I am having trouble with my title block showing up in my plan view. It says it is loaded but it does not show up.
I am currently updating and coming up with a better system for are plant layout file for AutoCAD. When this project is complete, it will be set up so if someone needs to make a change they can just make a copy of the X-Ref file for the area they will be updating and hand it back in when there done. I will review the updated X-Ref then switch out the old X-Ref file for the updated one.
Problem: the problem I am having is when I am in the master drawing that contains all the X-Ref files, the layers list becomes enormous. There are about 30 to 40 different X-Ref files with 15 layers each. Those 15 layers contain the exact same information but you have to edit them individually.
Question: Is there a way to make the 15 layers in the master effect the corresponding layer in all the X-ref files? For instance, you hide the “Machines” layer in the master and it hides the “Machines” layer in all the X-ref.
Side Note: If you were going to make the suggestion “use Xbind” I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work well because “Xbind” creates a new layer you have to assign to things instead of making the layers relate to one another.
When editing block in-place, not onely objects in the block, but also other objects (just drawn normal in modelspace), is affected by the commands.
I opened a file that was saved as .ai but I am unable to edit it. It's as though it was saved as a pdf (or similar uneditable document). It still has 2 unlocked layers. Why did it save that way and how do I fix it?
I know that in ACAD you can use the xref manager to see where the actual file for the xref resides on your computer/server/etc. What I'm curious about is whether or not the inverse action is possible. Can you somehow access the file (not the output sheet where it's being xref-ed) and see what other files are using it as an xref?
I've come in on a project that is nearing completion and have been assigned the task of 'cleaning up the project folder.' Unfortunately, there are a ton of files in the different folders that are no longer in use on the final output sheets and I need to keep the ones still in use and archive the ones that are no longer needed. What I've been doing is going through those sheets and reviewing the xref manager for each sheet to see which files are actually put onto those sheets and making a physical checklist from which to organize my findings. Once the checklist is made, I then archive all the files that are no longer being used.
The layers - which are clearly separate in photoshop - are compressed in elements, thus unable to edit.
As I can't bind a Tiff file (X-Ref) within AutoCad 2010, Is there another way to fully embed a tiff file into drawing file, so I only have to email one file to my client?
Now i attached more logos in the drawing file. The logos all in JPG files. This all jpg files in different locations. Every time i sent file to email attach with all jpg files. Some time i forget the attach files. So i need 'how bind all jpg files in the drawing file'. Now i am working with AutoCAD 2013.
I recently built a new PC dedicated to my photo work.
i7 2600k, 16gb DDR 3 ripjaws, 128GB crucial m4 SSD, (2) x 1TB 7200 HDDs (mirrored), Sapphire Radeon HD 5570.The first month or so of use LR worked great. However, recently I have been getting several errors and oddities.
1) Randomly closes. I can restart it without a problem and pick back up where I left off. There are not warnings or signs that it is about to close. it just does.
2) 'Unexpected end of file'. Unable to edit photo. Preview does show, however. I have never seen this error before on other machines.
3) Memory dumps. I assume this is related to LR3 as that is the only program I am actively using when it happens (Chome is always open as well, however) I will have the dump files examined to know for sure.
4) Something new that just started today. In the preview bar on the bottom, as I scroll through the photos I see the previews of other photos. some photos from other folders I took weeks or months ago. When I hover over the image it changes to what it should be.1 with a photo from this particular shoot and one from one I did over a month ago. Everything I scroll back and forth (rapidly or not) as the previews load it loads the wrong files first, multiple times (around 8 or 9 in a row) and then they slowly change to what it should be.
I am not sure if I am properly describing this error but it is really weird. Also, this seems to only happen on the images off a CF card. I was borrowing a friends D200 as a 2nd body for a party. When I scroll through the images off my SD card I do not see the issue appear. When I get to the CF portion of the folder is when I see the problem.I just updated LR today but these issues occured prior to the update and still exist afterwards.
Do I need to do a fresh install of LR?What precautions do I need to take in doing so to insure my catalogue stays intact?
